Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease and Obesity
Jeon Seong-Woo

Abstract
The prevalence of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is increasing in Asia. The clarification of the risk factors for the disease is currently the major issues in epidemiologic studies. Obesity surfaced as one of the culprits for GERD, however, controversies have been existed. The association between the obesity and GERD are positively correlated in epidemiologic studies with the mixed results in Barrett¡¯s esophagus, which necessitates more large studies to compensate the ethical and sex differences. The understanding of the mechanisms of obesity which leads to GERD would ensure physician¡¯s knowledge and help them to make correct consultation for the GERD patients regarding weight reduction. The evolving studies would be needed in this research field at near future to understand the exact causal relationship between these two factors.
